This is one of the first w\u0101hine I drew. She is strong, proud, and tenacious.<\/p>\n
The embodiment of a woman who persists in her cultural existence; she is not easily dispelled, nor does she stand for any degradation of her culture. She is the first to speak out against racial or social profiling, or warfare on her tangata whenua (people of the land).<\/p>\n
I have met so many M\u0101ori women who I deeply respect and admire for their indefatigable presence in standing up for their culture and ways of their people, regardless of bygone political viewpoints and media\u2019s push for cultural atrophy.<\/p>\n
Women who have imprinted this memory on me are those such as Dame Whina Cooper (who grew up in the Hokianga also), a revolutionary leader whose soft, yet firm voice led to incredible, diverse and lasting change on not only M\u0101ori women\u2019s rights, but M\u0101ori as a whole.<\/p>\n
