Description
Quality Fine Art Print – Soft White Etching Decor
This is one of the first wāhine I drew. She is strong, proud, and tenacious.
The embodiment of a woman who persists in her cultural existence; she is not easily dispelled, nor does she stand for any degradation of her culture. She is the first to speak out against racial or social profiling, or warfare on her tangata whenua (people of the land).
I have met so many Māori women who I deeply respect and admire for their indefatigable presence in standing up for their culture and ways of their people, regardless of bygone political viewpoints and media’s push for cultural atrophy.
Women who have imprinted this memory on me are those such as Dame Whina Cooper (who grew up in the Hokianga also), a revolutionary leader whose soft, yet firm voice led to incredible, diverse and lasting change on not only Māori women’s rights, but Māori as a whole.
This print comes with a postcard-sized explanation card.
20% of all profits from my prints sold go to Trust Teina, a charitable trust run by Debbie and Pio Terei. Their vision and mission is “The Ultimate Koha” – Giving to save Māori and Pasifika lives through increasing the blood, bone marrow and organ donor registers in Aotearoa New Zealand.
